BMW Motorrad is the brand used by the German company known as BMW for its motorcycles, manufacturing the bikes and motorcycle gear since 1923. The year 1921 was the true beginning of the BMW motorcycle company. During World War I the company was originally founded as an aircraft engine manufacturer and the first motorcycle wasn’t introduced until 1923. The first motorcycle introduced by BMW Motorrad was the R32 with the flat twin boxer engine most associated with the company’s history.
The plant for producing BMW Motorrad motorcycles is located in Berlin, Germany. Other engines manufactured by the company are produced in China, Austria, and Taiwan. 2008 was a banner year for BMW Motorrad, which sold over 100,000 motorcycles, where the most popular models was the R1200GS. The BMW G450X motorcycle was released in 2008, entering BMW Motorrad into serious motorcycle competition.
